Airline ground handling

Stabilising workforce planning in cargo handling operations

dnata is a well known airline ground handling agent across many airports around the world. Following their move to a new, state-of-the-art cargo building in Amsterdam, they experienced multiple operational challenges. This included poor resource planning for the 24/7/365 ramp- and warehouse operations.

As Interim Planning Manager I have helped stabilising and optimising staff rostering and capacity planning. During 6 months we changed an isolated, ad-hoc and backwards working department, into a motivated, pro-active team that collaborates with operations in planning ahead. They are now ready for the next phase of optimisation.

Managing pilot project on crowd control and ticketing

The Zaanse Schans is one of the major Dutch tourist destinations. The area faces an increasing challenge to continue facilitating an ever increasing number of visitors. It is more and more difficult to balance commercial objectives, protection of cultural heritage, and a pleasant working and living environment.

I have lead a pilot project to test and measure in practice the effects of ticketing and crowd control measures to smoothen the visitor flows across time and place. We deployed a network of counting sensors, introduced a temporary ticket scanning solution across the major attractions, and experimented with various sales models. We analysed resulting data, which provided valuable insights for policy making on future operating models.

Clarifying airfreight hub cross-dock processes

DHL is one of the largest global freight forwarding companies. After experiencing major growth in imports and exports at their Amsterdam hub, they found their cross-dock processes lacking alignment, and facilitating too many exceptions. Moreover, employees were experts on their individual parts, but nobody knew the details of the end-to-end processes.

I helped as a consultant mapping out all import and export processes, detailing the critical handover points. We translated this into highly visual onboarding instructions. Moreover, this allowed for better capacity control and helped setting the basis for moving into a into their new facility a few months later.

Leading vaccination campaign during Corona pandemic

GGD Zaanstreek-Waterland is the regional government organisation responsible for the public health of 340,000 inhabitants North of Amsterdam. During the Covid-19 pandemic they were challenged to setup from scratch and under immense time pressure, two large scale vaccination locations and a variety of mobile solutions.

I have been the Project Leader for the regional development, implementation, scaling and flexing of their Covid-19 vaccination campaign. We found, setup and outfitted sites, organised all activities, designed work procedures, trained staff, and implemented all logistics and capacity management. At its peak we realised over 5,000 vaccinations daily, working with a team of 800 FTE temporary staff, in two shifts.

Delivering commercial and leadership trainings

Maersk is a global integrator of container logistics. Amongst others, they serve some of the world's largest retailers and fashion brands. Primarily combining a strong origin management product, their shipping line activities and digital solutions. Adding a client centric approach to a strong believe it their own heritage didn't come natural to everyone.

During a period of several years, I co-developed the structure and logic of their sales learning academy, and have developed and delivered value selling trainings to their senior sales teams around the world. I also facilitated sessions on commercial acumen and client centricity for their global talent and graduate programs.

Stimulating client centricity and consultative value selling

Noatum Logistics is a global provider of logistics services. Growing from a Spanish heritage, they are now part of the Abu Dhabi based AD Ports group. Not being the largest or most specialised in their markets, they identified client centricity as a core differentiator for achieving sustainable growth.

Over the years I have been partnering with them as a consultant and trainer to define and deliver this commercial vision. I helped sharpen their ideas and have facilitated multiple team meetings. I also developed practical tools to help their sales force excel. Moreover, have I developed and delivered online and face-to-face tailor made trainings to their teams across the world on the topic of client centric value selling.

Managing warehouse consolidation for a wholesaler in hair care products

Managing European warehouse consolidation

Sally Beauty is an American wholesaler of hair care products, distributing anything a hairdresser needs, including for their own Pro Duo brand. They were on a mission to consolidate four European warehouses into one, whilst at the same time automating some of their physical handling processes and introducing a new ERP WMS module. The project proved complex and difficult to manage.

I stepped in as Interim Project Manager. We installed a central control room and created a pragmatic, agile based activity tracker, showing sequence, dependencies and progress of activities. We also used a structured review cycle. This resulted in improved project control, better prioritisation decisions and early warning signals to mitigate any issues.

Improving capacity planning in preventative child healthcare

GGD Zaanstreek-Waterland is the regional government organisation responsible for the public health of 340,000 inhabitants North of Amsterdam. They were unsure about the optimal deployment model for child healthcare nurses and doctors at schools and across their 14 own locations.

As a consultant, I analysed and improved the existing staff planning methodology. We changed the local planning into a centralised model for staff rostering and appointment making. We cleaned base data, we aligned working policies and opening hours, and we developed and introduced a hands-on planning tool. This resulted in central insight and better control over productivity and capacity. It also improved decision making on the deployment of scarce resources and service availability.

Facilitating collaboration post-acquisition at a global provider of logistics services

Facilitating international collaboration post-acquisition

Noatum Logistics is a growing global provider of logistics services. Prior to becoming part of the Abu Dhabi based AD Ports group, they acquired a rival company as part of their growth strategy. It was recognised that collaboration may not come naturally between the global stakeholders of one of their main product divisions.

Following mutual introductory interviews, I acted during an interim period as the neutral facilitator between the key players across various regions. We met frequently online and in -person, developed shared service definitions, and set the joint growth agenda. This resulted in a smoother integration and an aligned business approach.

Regions were asked to help provide extra capacity.

I was the projectleader working with the local authorities and to coordinating the onsite conversion activities for one of the additional emergency locations. In just a few weeks we converted an indoor athletics training centre into temporary shelter accommodation, including bedding and additional catering and sanitary facilities.

GCE Logistics are a niche player in international forwarding and trade compliance. Amongst others they provide importer of record services in collaboration with partners around the world. They were looking to improve their value proposition and go-to-market strategy for this highly specialised service.

I worked with them as a consultant facilitating the proces of market research and defining the unique differentiators of their business. We identified various market segments, key client needs and their buying considerations. We also reviewed different possible market approaches. This translated into a compelling new value proposition for their business.
